Danse Macabre: a carousel in the night and an animated film by Hans Op de Beeck
The Tenuta Dello Scompiglio in Vorno, near Lucca, presents Danse Macabre, a solo exhibition by the Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck curated by Angel Moya Garcia. The project brings together a site-specific installation and the animated film Vanishing Point.
The installation that gives the show its title is a black-and-white park at night, with bare trees, puddles and burning oil drums. The path leads to a life-size grey carousel, standing still in the dark: on board, a family of skeletons seems to be enjoying itself among plates, bottles and the leftovers of a party.
The title recalls the medieval dances of death and the memento mori of still-life painting. The carousel is a motif that runs through all of Op de Beeck’s work, starting with the 1999 video Blender.
Vanishing Point, made in watercolour with music by Sam Vloemans performed by the Hermes Ensemble, takes its name from the vanishing point of perspective and turns it into a metaphor for the passage from the concrete to the unknown.
