What to expect
The exhibition retraces Shiota’s entire production: drawings, photographs, sculptures, performative videos and some of his most famous environmental and monumental installations.
The installations feature interweaving of red or black threads that wrap around the space, transforming it and creating immersive environments in which the viewer is an integral part of the experience.
Some symbolic works present (already exhibited in international venues) include:
• Uncertain Journey (with boat skeletons immersed in red threads)
• In Silence (burned piano and chairs wrapped in black wires)
• Reflection of Space and Time (woven dress and mirror)
• Accumulation – Searching for the Destination (hanging bags, memory and migration as a metaphor)
• Inside-Outside (reflection on inside and outside, intimacy and public space)
The exhibition project develops in continuity with the rooms of the permanent collection of the MAO, in order to integrate the artist’s works with the museum context itself.
A rich public program will accompany the exhibition throughout the duration: performances, screenings, meetings, workshops for schools, families and adults.
A bilingual catalog (Italian / English) has been published by Silvana Editoriale, with curatorial essays and contributions from international scholars.
