More than 140 works tell the story of Keith Haring and his bond with Italy

The Museo di Roma at Palazzo Braschi hosts a major retrospective devoted to Keith Haring, with more than 140 works drawn largely from the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection, alongside public and private loans. It is curated by Kaoru Yanase, Ilaria Miarelli Mariani and Claudio Zambianchi.

The exhibition opens with the artist’s relationship with Italy: his first solo show in Naples in 1983, his intervention in the Fiorucci store in Milan, the lost mural at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome (1984) and Tuttomondo in Pisa (1989). It then goes back to his New York beginnings, with the Subway Drawings and the panels painted along FDR Drive.

The Icons series (1990) gathers his best-known figures, from the radiant baby to the angel and the barking dog, while the posters document his stand against apartheid, racism, the nuclear threat and AIDS.

After the fluorescent works devoted to the body, music and the joy of living, the finale is entrusted to Apocalypse and Altarpiece: The Life of Christ, a reflection on death, faith and transcendence. The exhibition is promoted by Roma Capitale and the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, which co-produces and organises it with MondoMostre.
