Man Ray: tutto. More than 300 works, fifty years after his death
Fifty years after the death of Man Ray (Philadelphia 1890 – Paris 1976), the Fondazione Magnani-Rocca devotes to him Man Ray: tutto, presented as the most complete retrospective on the artist held in Italy. It is curated by Walter Guadagnini, Mauro Carrera and Stefano Roffi.
The Villa dei Capolavori in Mamiano di Traversetolo brings together more than 300 works: photographs, paintings, objects, sculptures, prints, books and films, conveying an idea of art that cuts across every discipline.
The exhibition starts with the American and Dada period, continues with his arrival in Paris in 1921, where Man Ray became the photographer of the avant-garde and worked for fashion, and takes in his experiments with rayographs and solarisation, Surrealist painting, cinema and objects such as Cadeau (1921). The best-known images include Le Violon d’Ingres (1924) and Noire et Blanche.
One section looks closely at the artist’s relationship with Italy, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. The catalogue is published by Dario Cimorelli Editore.
