Metamorfosi, Bertozzi & Casoni, a cura di Eike Schmidt e Diego Galizzi

The exhibition, which can be visited until April 26, 2026, takes place in the rooms of the Royal Apartments on the first floor of the Museum, from the Pompeian Living Room to the elegant Festival Hall.

Original and visionary protagonists of contemporary sculpture, Bertozzi & Casoni nurtured their artistic research inspired by the famous exhibition Civilisation of the eighteenth century, made in 1980 at the Capodimonte Museum. More than forty years after that first and significant encounter with the greatest expressions of Neapolitan art of the eighteenth century, they return to Capodimonte with the exhibition Metamorfosi, a selection of about twenty works, including loans from private collections and unpublished ones made especially for the occasion.

The exhibition project develops around the theme of metamorphosis, understood both as an iconographic transfiguration of the subjects and as an intrinsic process of matter that, subjected to high temperatures, goes through various phases of transformation, generating fascinating and disconcerting results.

The result is an exasperated hyperrealism, crossed by surreal accents and a powerful ironic vein.

On display, the duo’s creations establish an articulated dialogue with furnishings, objects and works of the Historical Apartment, giving rise to surprising combinations and offering the public the opportunity to deepen a critical reflection on the medium of contemporary porcelain.

Within this visual universe characterized by excess and accumulation, in which meticulous detail coexists with the chaos of rejection, ceramics is configured as a privileged field of experimentation, thinning the boundary between preciousness and degradation, order and disorder, beauty and bizarreness.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog, published by Silvana Editoriale, to be presented soon. The volume includes, in addition to the essays by the curators Eike Schmidt and Diego Galizzi, an interview by Luciana Berti with the artist Paolo Bertozzi and Claudia Pedrini, widow of Stefano Casoni Dal Monte, a contribution by Maria Laura Chiacchio on the historic apartment and a rich photographic apparatus with all the works on display and the related installation views.
